Neighbourhood Stories

NORTH STRATHFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD STORIES

In July 2013, 'Our Local Heritage'project, including the North Strathfield Shopping Village heritage preservation and precinct renewal, won the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW / Sydney Water / Office of Environment Heritage and Heritage Council of NSW Heritage Award.

The North Strathfield Shopping Village revitalisation project is a perfect example that highlights the benefit of taking an holistic approach to the dual processes of heritage preservation and precinct renewal. It involved working with local businesses, community, artists, oral historians, heritage organisations and council officers, employing an interdisciplinary methodology throughout its development.

A central element to this project was the involvement of past and present community members. In 2012, the community was invited to participate in this project that culminated in an exhibition at Concord Library and an online Neighbourhood Stories oral histories heritage collection.

Neighbourhood Stories celebrates the lives, stories and experiences of the community surrounding the North Strathfield Shopping Village, past and present. The project is an identified action in the City of Canada Bay North Strathfield Place Plan.

Camden Voices Online

CAMDEN VOICES ONLINE

Camden Voices Online is a social history project focusing on individuals who have grown up or worked in the area or live in a place which has or will soon change.

The interviews were carried out by local volunteers who generously donated their time to the project.

One of fun outcomes was that intergenerational relatives now scattered far and wide began re-connecting after learning of their family histories.

The project was made possible by a Library Council of New South Wales Library Development Grant.
